In episode 15 of the Oral Torah series, Yoel and Jeff discuss the period between the Talmud and the Geionite.  In particular, the Karaite answer to the Rabbinic position.

This was some really great discussion! I found it profoundly interesting as you were talking about the Karaite movement. Particularly the “Candle Blowers”! Being the spiritual child that I am with my personal lack of knowledge with custom and history in Judaism I have made some of the natural conclusions such as blowing out flame without actually knowing that others have made the same assertions for various different reasons. Not that its right or wrong but with a lack of historical knowledge can promote equal Peshot.

I also really enjoyed the discussion on Karaite interpretation. “Do we actually know how to read this” Its particularly important for those of us that are leaning Hebrew. Our translations are based on a culture that did not write the Torah.

Thanks for this discussion!

Shalom, Yoel!
Why is forbidden to play a musical instrument in Shabbat?
Thank you very much!

It is a rabbinic law which prohibits playing instruments due to the possibility that one might need to fix it if something breaks or is broken.
